Sun Safe
Skin cancer is now the most common cancer in the UK, with rates rising faster than any other type. Children are especially vulnerable due to their sensitive skin and time spent outdoors, often during peak UV hours (11am–3pm). Research shows that just one instance of sunburn in childhood can double the risk of developing melanoma later in life.
-
Children are encouraged to wear hats when UV levels are 3 or above. Alternatively, play in shaded areas or indoors.
-
Sunscreen should be applied at home before school, with labelled bottles sent in for reapplication if needed.
-
Lessons in sun safety are delivered through our PSHE curriculum, and assemblies will reinforce these messages in an engaging and age-appropriate way.
-
Staff act as role models by following the same sun safety practices.
We encourage parents and carers to support this initiative by:
-
Providing appropriate clothing and sun hats
-
Ensuring sunscreen is applied before school
-
Promoting good sun safety behaviours during weekends and holidays
Our aim is to build awareness, foster independence, and protect every child from preventable sun damage. You can view our full policy [here], and we’ll continue sharing updates through newsletters and school communications.
